And, perhaps that is the problem. Instead of raising the minimum wage, I would propose tying the compensation of the highest-paid executives to that of the lowest-paid worker. For example, a minimum wage worker, working 40 hours a week, 52 weeks a year would earn $19,240. If the highest allowable compensation was limited to 15 times that of the lowest compensation, the top executives would be paid a pittance of only $288,600. If a company wanted to increase the compensation of their top executives, they would have to increase that of their other employees proportionately. Probably just wishful thinking. Dann Houghton Eagle Point Perilous days Who would ever believe we would be living in a world where the following things happened: 1. A pilot of a commercial airliner purposely destroys himself and 19 other people by crashing the plane into a mountainside. 2. Terrorists get into a university in Africa and separate the Christians from the other students and kill them. They spent 13 hours doing this before they were shot. By the time this horrible attack was over, 18 students were dead and many wounded. 3. Twenty-one Coptic Christian men from Egypt went to Iraq looking for work. They were captured by the ISIS forces and ended up dying together as a group by decapitation. 4. A massive tornado swept through Fairdale, Ill., at 200 mph and destroyed the city. (yes, 200 mph). These things just recently all happened. There is a scripture verse in the Bible, II Timothy 3:1, that says, "In the last days perilous days shall come." Does it sound like we are perhaps living in these perilous days? Gordon DeVos Medford Found it The candidate build-up to the 2016 election reminds me of the story of the old guy sitting on his porch playing guitar. The neighbors noticed that he always strummed one chord. The same chord. Finally one of the neighbors said, "I see other guitar players moving their hands all over the neck, playing lots of different notes and lots of different chords. But you always play the same one. Why is that?" The old guy said, "They're lookin' for it. I found it." As a parent with children in our school system, I appreciate Lilia’s commitment to ensuring that all students succeed in graduating and feel certain she has the necessary qualities to make this goal a reality. Lilia has a long history with our school system, and her background supports her ability to network with many other agencies and organizations in the best interest of our children. A second highly qualified candidate is Karen Starchvick, who is running for Medford School Board Position 4. Karen and Lilia share so many of the same qualities that together they should be able to accomplish their goals of providing all students with a well-rounded education and help our already fine schools become even better.
