The fire started at about 12:40 p.m. in a field near the intersection of East Vilas and North Foothill roads, according to Jackson County Fire District 3. Division Chief Dave Blakely said four engines each responded from District 3 and the Oregon Department of Forestry. The fire started on private land in short, dry grass, Blakely said. Twenty-four firefighters stopped the blaze in about five minutes, keeping the burn to three-quarters of an acre, he said. Crews remained on scene afterward to mop up hot spots and make sure the fire wouldn't reignite. No one was injured.  "If it was tall grass, it would have been much worse," Blakely said .  Industrial fire precautions rose Wednesday to level 2 in southwestern Oregon because of "prolonged dry conditions," ODF officials said. The restrictions apply to contractors and permit holders, including those with permits for cutting firewood for personal use. Under the precautions, the use of fire in any form is prohibited, and power saws are prohibited between 1 and 8 p.m., except at loading sites. Cable yarders, blasting and the welding or cutting of metal is also prohibited during those hours. Commercial operators on forestlands are required to have a watchman and fire-suppression equipment on site. Restrictions continue on debris burning, fireworks on forestlands, use of exploding targets, tracer ammunition and sky lanterns.
