Ski Ashland wins environmental award ASHLAND - Community-owned Ski Ashland received the Silver Eagle Award for Excellence in Environmental Education during the National Ski Area Association annual convention this month in Palm Springs, Calif. The award recognized the Mount Ashland Youth Summer Service Program, now about to begin its seventh year atop the mountain. The object of the program is to allow "youth to enjoy and learn about the mountain environment and to understand that stewardship and hard work are necessary for care and enjoyment of recreational opportunities," said program coordinator Ty Hisatomi. "This program literally grew out of a grass-roots effort by volunteers to pass on Mount Ashland's environmental stewardship belief to future generations, and to develop a community for the ski area," said Ski Ashland general manager Jeff Hanson, who accepted the award for the facility. Students entering the eighth and ninth grades are eligible to participate. Ski Ashland provides supervision and transportation for the program. Work projects include litter pickup, improving erosion control structures and planting grass seeds and grass plugs provided by the Forest Service. In addition to learning the value of environmental stewardship, the work enables participants to earn a season pass at Ski Ashland.
