Mustangs sweep in Redding REDDING, Calif. - The Medford Mustangs finished off their trip to California with a sweep against the Redding Tigers and a 3-1 start to the 2001 season. The Mustangs controlled both games with dominating pitching and timely hitting. In Game 1 Chris Empio, Dustin Butler and Jon McCollum combined to hold the Tigers to only one run to lead the Mustangs to a 6-1 win. Empio picked up the lone earned run but allowed just four hits in four innings to go along with four strikeouts. Butler and McCollum allowed two hits the rest of the way. Dave Henneman provided the offensive punch for the Mustangs with a two out, 3-run triple in the top of the first inning. "That was a big hit for us with two outs," Mustangs general manager Don Snider said. "It pretty much set the tone." Matt Smith went 2-for-3 with one RBI, and Jon McCollum went 2-for-4 with one RBI for the Mustangs. Mike Klein and David Pierce each had a triple for the Tigers in Game 1. In Game 2, Brent Kircher allowed one run and five hits in seven innings to lead the Mustangs to the 4-1 victory. Kircher pitched himself out of a jam in the second inning by striking out Mike Klein with two men on and two outs. Kircher then proceeded to retire 15 of the next 16 batters to get the win. Kircher issued two walks while striking out six. Mustang pitching has allowed just five runs over the last three games respectively. Tyler Engle went 2-for-3 with two doubles, and Rob Folsom chipped in with two RBI. Next up for the Mustangs is a doubleheader on Wednesday against the Klamath Falls Falcons.
