UP NEXT: Next Wednesday, first-round Class 6A state playoffs, at South Medford High. » Social News When Tom Cole moved to Southern Oregon from Missouri in 1995, one of his biggest goals was to help build up the community's youth through after-school activities, like basketball. He's done that through his work as executive director of Kids Unlimited. But along the way, Cole did something else: He won. A lot. Now in his eighth year at the helm of the South Medford girls basketball team, Cole and the top-ranked Panthers capped their fifth straight undefeated league season with an 86-41 win over Grants Pass at South Medford High on Tuesday. South has won 64 straight conference contests, dating back to a loss to North Medford on Feb. 17, 2010. During that span, the program has been nationally ranked, traveled around the nation to play some of America's finest and appeared in the last three Class 6A state finals, securing the 2012 crown in undefeated fashion. It's a ride that Cole has appreciated. "(The win streak) is a reflection of the kind of program that we have and it's a reflection of the kinds of kids who we've been fortunate to have come through here," said Cole, whose team is seeking its fifth straight trip to the state tournament at the Rose Garden in Portland. "We say family, and it's really about a tradition that's been established. When you step back from it, it is really something we are all very proud of. Yet we know the ultimate prize is to finish in Portland." Keyari Sleezer had 20 points and six assists and Julissa Tago 18 points, eight rebounds and four assists for the Panthers (21-4, 14-0 SWC) against the Cavers (6-17, 4-10), who trailed 29-3 after the first quarter. Sleezer, a senior, said with each new year on the team, the bar seemed to be raised. "I think (the win streak) just shows we really built a legacy here, because I know when Tom first started it definitely wasn't that way," she said. "So we've definitely built it up to have all these great opportunities to travel and every year we get a new opportunity." Hannah Washington erupted for 14 points and 16 rebounds and Jasmin Falls added 13 points and six rebounds for South, which will will host a first-round state playoff contest on March 4. A victory would ensure a second-round home game on March 7, with the winner moving on to the quarterfinal round in Portland. Krystal Williams chipped in 11 points and four assists and Lauren Orndoff six points and four assists for the Panthers, who outrebounded the Cavers, 40-14. The secret to the team's success, Williams said, is its dedication. "To be perfectly honest, it's because we challenge ourselves," she said. "We push ourselves every day in practice, we go out and play hard teams and we're not afraid to lose. And by doing that we see our abilities grow. ... We branch out as a program. That's proven very good for us." South starter Andee Ritter was held out for precautionary reasons for a second straight game with some tenderness in the knee she had surgery on. She is considered day-to-day. "They continue to have evaluations from their physician," Cole said of the Ritter family. "You have to err on the side of safe." The triumph was South's 12th straight (it lost to Capital Prep of Connecticut amid the league season on Jan. 16). The loss was Grants Pass' fifth straight. Abi Johnson led the Cavers with 12 points. "Tom's doing a heck of a job," Grants Pass head coach Scott Wakefield said. "Obviously seeing what they've been able to do, year in and year out, it's a pretty a neat deal. He's running a high quality program right now and you can see that by what they do on the national circuit and in the preseason. And then there is something to be said about being in the state title game the last three years."
