Michael Devin Catlett-Carpenter, 35, of the 2600 block of Dark Hollow Road, Medford, pleaded not guilty Wednesday to charges of second-degree kidnapping, coercion, fourth-degree assault, menacing, recklessly endangering and reckless driving. He remained in jail today without bail. According to the probable cause affidavit, Catlett-Carpenter drove erratically around Applegate Lake and Cantrell Buckley Park. His girlfriend said that he drove at speeds of about 100 mph on upper Applegate Road and made threats that he was going to crash the vehicle and kill them both. The victim stated that she was so fearful that she jumped out of the moving vehicle at one point, but on her first attempt to flee the truck Catlett-Carpenter jumped out, picked her up and forcibly shoved her back into the truck where he physically assaulted her. The affidavit states he slapped his girlfriend in the face "numerous times," pulled her hair and grabbed her by the neck. The victim reported him at the emergency room at Providence Medford Medical Center on Oct. 1, where she was treated for injuries, including a small cut on the bridge of her nose, finger marks on the back of her neck and what appeared to be a bruise on her left arm. The victim said she made other attempts to get away during the incident. She said when she made it out of the truck, Catlett-Carpenter would speed off, spin the vehicle around and drive toward her at a high rate of speed before slamming the brakes and skidding to a stop near her. The victim said Catlett-Carpenter made "numerous" threats to kill her, and she told Jackson County sheriff's deputies that she believed he was going to kill her numerous times throughout the ordeal. The incident is also a violation of a May 13 Clark County, Wash., no-contact order protecting the victim from Catlett-Carpenter. The restraining order stemmed from Washington domestic violence charges of fourth-degree assault and unlawful imprisonment. Catlett-Carpenter is also facing domestic violence charges for alleged incidents against family members in December 2014 and January of this year. A trial date of Jan. 5, 2016, is set for that case.
