Dunbar, 81, of Central Point, Oregon died at home on the evening of Wednesday, December 10, 2014. After a lengthy battle with Parkinson's disease, and with his family at his side, he was peacefully taken to a better place. John was born in Winfield, Kansas July 3, 1933, the first of four children, to James C. and Mary A. Dunbar. His sister, Margaret Lee of Lakeview, Oregon, and brother, James C. Dunbar Jr. of Central Point, Oregon are previously deceased. His brother, Jerry Dunbar resides in Lakeview, Oregon. John was raised in Winfield until he was 7 years old, then moved with his family for brief periods to Nevada, and Washington, finally to reside in Lakeview, Oregon. He attended Lakeview High School, and graduated from L.H.S. in 1952. He was married to Cherrel A. Hoydic in November of 1952, while serving as a member of the National Guard, in Lakeview. In his early career, he studied for an electronics degree and certification, while working as a cement truck driver and mill worker. He gained his certification as an Electronics Technician, and opened Valley Furniture and Appliances in Lakeview, Oregon. After a few years, he closed the store, and began a career as an equipment operator in AFL/CIO Union Local 701. He eventually became a Crane operator, working locally for over 45 years. During his career, he became an avid golfer, and practicing bass fisherman, both activities propelled him to become a more accomplished storyteller. He shared his love of golf with his wife and his many friends. Upon his retirement in 2002, he pursued both interests with much happiness and devotion. John is survived by Cherrel A. Dunbar, his devoted wife of over 62 years. He is also survived by his son Michael Dunbar and his wife Sandy, and his daughter Diana and her husband Frank Norris, all of Medford. John has six grandchildren, Melissa Smith of Orlando, Florida, Ginger Vandenberg of Portland, Oregon, Kelley Simmons of Sanford, Florida, Michelle Crossan of Anderson, South Carolina, Clayton Norris of Central Point, Oregon, and John Norris of Central Point, Oregon. John is also survived by seven great-grandchildren, Kyle, Cameron, Rachel, Michael, Jason, Jenna, and newborn Emma. A brief service and farewell for friends and family will be held in the chapel of Perl Funeral Home & Siskiyou Memorial Park, located at 2100 Siskiyou Blvd., Medford, Oregon on Friday, December 19, 2014 at 11:00 AM. A gathering of friends and family will be held at the home of John and Cherry following the service.
