Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Aug. 23, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Aug. 23, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News Aug. 23, 1915 THIRD CROP OF ALFALFA POSSIBLE ONLY WITH WATER A practical demonstration of the good which may come to growing crops from the use of a little water is an alfalfa field, one mile east of Talent, owned by the Glasgow-Stratton Company. The company has a field of about 100 acres seeded to alfalfa, but not until this season have the owners been able to get water for even a partial wetting of part of the land. They and a couple of neighbors have made a ditch for a distance of three miles and have brought water from Bear Creek to a portion of their tract. It was not longer than five weeks ago that water first began running in the ditch, and then only in sufficient quantity to cover about 30 acres of the tract. So dry and hard was the ground when the water was turned on the field that it was necessary to use a pick in making what few laterals were made, but as a result of this meager wetting this third crop is yielding a good two tons of alfalfa to the acre. Equally as good land in the same field which was not irrigated produced practically no third crop at all — only a spot here and there which would be worth cutting. No water was had for either the first or second crops, and there would have been no third crop had it not been for the wetting given 30 acres of the land. The company is selling the hay in the field at $10 per ton, and there are plenty of buyers. Here is a mathematical problem. Thirty acres of alfalfa produces 60 tons of hay; hay is sold in the field at $10 per ton, or an even $600 for the whole crop; effect, $600, practically all "velvet," as the gentleman of chance would put it, except that there is no chance or gamble in producing crops when water may be had when needed. Another season, the Glasgow-Stratton company will have the remainder of the field put in shape for irrigating and water will be put on all of it, included as well a 25-acre grain field. So thoroughly convinced is the company as to the value of water that they have signed up with the Water Users Association for water to cover 50 acres of their land which cannot be reached with water from the ditch they are now using.
