Bee Girl Honey's entry in the 2016 Good Food Awards Liquid Honey class wowed the judges enough to claim top prize Friday. The Ashland artisan, one of three local companies making the finals, was joined on the podium by Rogue Creamery, which walked away with two top performers at the San Francisco event. "This is just the second year we've produced enough honey to sell," said Red-Laid, a longtime beekeeper, educator and bee conservationist. "A friend of mine, from AZ Queen Bee in Arizona, who won last year, encouraged me to supply." So did the chair of the honey section of the Good Food Awards, who was aware of Red-Laird's long-standing work in her field. "This will be an amazing opportunity to let people know what's behind the label and what's in the jar," said Red-Laird, who is in the process of moving her headquarters to Ashland's Railroad District. "It's sustainably harvested, raw and pure." Good Food Awards encourages environmentally sound agricultural practices, good animal husbandry, transparency and responsible supply-chain relationships. The competition featured 1,937 entries from 263 companies, showcasing regional flavors from across the country. Central Point's Rogue Creamery captured two Good Food Awards for its Flora Nelle and Rogue River Blue cheeses. The Flora Nelle is an organic cheese set with calf rennet, while Rogue River Blue is made each autumn using richer, late-season milk. This blue is finished with pear-brandy-soaked grape leaves. ”Today, cheese is being recognized along with the practices connected to creating it, and Rogue Creamery is proud that we make our cheese sustainably and organically in the GMO-free Rogue Valley," David Gremmels, president and cheesemaker, said in prepared remarks during Friday's awards presentation. Noble Coffee Co. founder and CEO Jared Rennie said he was disappointed, but the Ashland roaster still can hang his hat on the fact that Noble entries have won three times and been finalists five out of six years. In order to reach the finals, Noble Coffee had to make the top five in a northern tier of states reaching to Minnesota. "It's disappointing," Rennie said. "But it's also pretty exciting we have done that well because that's a competitive coffee roasting region." Reach reporter Greg Stiles at 541-776-4463 or [email protected] .
