Just curious. — No name given   We don't chuck it all in a big furnace if that's what you're thinking. No, that unused bit of paper actually heads to one of two destinations. There are computerized presets built into the printing press that cut off paper rolls at a certain point. This makes it so all unused paper amounts are pretty close to the mark: about one-third of an inch in thickness on the roll, or about 80 feet completely unrolled.  Afterward, some paper is taken off the roll completely, put in a baler and sent off to a recycler. The rest is given out to the public on a first-come, first-serve basis. At 1 p.m. on Thursdays, whoever can get to the Mail Tribune the quickest can walk away with the leftovers. "Depending on how seriously you want it," says Mail Tribune production preprint coordinator Karen Redfield. Redfield says the offer has already drawn several regulars, including schools, Pear Blossom Parade enthusiasts who need the material for floats, ScienceWorks in Ashland, artists, the Salvation Army and the Jacksonville Children's Festival.
