What is the fate of those marked trees? — Edgar H., Medford Their fate isn’t very good, Edgar. We checked in with Steve Vincent at Avisa Utilities, and he said those trees are very close to a “backbone” natural gas pipeline that runs through the area. It’s the roots of the trees that are the big problem. They tend to wrap themselves around a pipeline. “We don’t want a windstorm to blow over the tree and rip out the gas line,” Vincent said. The trees are located on a right-of-way owned by Jackson County. As a result, Avista is working with the county to identify the trees that need to be removed, and the county will do the work. Vincent said the federal government has guidelines regarding utility safety, and Avista is attempting to follow those guidelines. The line in question is six inches in diameter and is the main line for much of the west county, Vincent said. Avista performed similar work recently, clearing out trees near a line in the Rogue River area, Vincent said. At present, the county and Avista are in the preliminary phases of identifying problem trees, so Vincent said he’s not sure how many will have to be removed.
