(Ryan) Mills Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Feb. 14, 2015 @ 2:00 am Posted Feb. 14, 2015 @ 2:00 am »  Social News Arlene Marjorie Mills, 94, passed away January 30, 2015 at her home in Ashland, Ore. Our beloved mother and grandmother was surrounded by family and friends, and aided by hospice. It marked the end of a remarkable life. Arlene was born December 24, 1920 to Lelia B. and William M. Ryan in Haverhill, Mass. She was raised in Haverhill alongside her brother Robert (Bob) Ryan and graduated as valedictorian of her class at St. James High School. She completed nursing school at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston where she worked alongside many of the most innovative doctors of the day. She always said she made the best decision of her life when she married Merle E. Mills June 30, 1946 at St. James Church in Haverhill, Mass. Thus began 30 years of Navy life, which carried the Mills' through 18 moves across countless states as well as Panama and Puerto Rico. Sons, Kirby, Dennis, and Andrew arrived along the way, followed by daughter, Melissa. When Merle retired as a Commander in the U.S. Navy in 1968, the Mills' made their final move to Ashland. Merle took up teaching and building airplanes. Arlene took her nursing skills to Rogue Valley Medical Center and Ashland Community Hospital, then retired after 10 years at SOSC Health Center where many people benefited from her brand of practical compassion. She was an excellent nurse and always available to help someone in need. Arlene was also a tireless advocate of education and saw all of her children graduate college. Though happily rooted in Ashland, Arlene and Merle continued to pursue their love of travel, rambling through the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Europe, and the Panama Canal (to name but a few destinations). Merle died in Ashland in 2007. Despite years of health challenges, Arlene carried on as the "Eveready Bunny" of the Mills clan. She looked forward to every day and made the most of each one. All who knew her remarked on her intelligence, humor, and resilience. She is survived by all of her children and six grandchildren. Her grandkids believe she is now out "gallivanting around" with "that handsome guy," her husband Merle. They were happily married 62 years...but for the two of them, even a lifetime to love could never be long enough. Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 14, 2015 at Hillcrest Memorial Park.
