Tyler Jesse Sandoval was sentenced today in Jackson County Circuit Court to the mandatory minimum of 90 months in state prison after pleading guilty to two counts of attempted murder in the Sept. 16 shooting for which he was being tried as an adult. Sandoval also pleaded guilty to charges of unlawful use of a weapon and rioting and had two felony charges dropped as part of a plea deal meted out in court today, a day before his scheduled trial. Sandoval fired a handgun three times into an apartment stairwell along Narregan Street toward several people, including a 6-year-old child, according to police. Two of the shots sent bullets into an apartment wall while one shot was a blank, prosecutors said in court. "You're very fortunate you didn't kill anybody," Jackson County Circuit Judge David Hoppe told Sandoval in court. Sandoval, who does not turn 18 until May 19, not only faced charges as an adult but also faced a potential sentence of 15 years under gang-related sentencing enhancements sought by prosecutor Virginia Greer. Greer said she sought gang-related classification for Sandoval to help him "walk the straight and narrow" during his time with the state Department of Corrections. Defense attorney Christopher Missiaen said in court that he discussed with Sandoval to use his prison time to prepare for his eventual release while still a young man. "I hope he comes out of this as a better person," Missiaen told Hoppe. Hoppe ordered three years of post-prison supervision for Sandoval as well. Co-defendants Latraveon Deshawn Wesley, 19, and Alonzo Lee McBrown, 31, were both scheduled to be tried beginning Tuesday on charges of rioting and conspiracy to commit a Class C felony. Co-­defendant Santiago Loveland­ Flores faces riot and attempted third-degree assault for his role in the confrontation. He is serving a 16-month prison term in California on weapons conviction and will later be extradited to face his charges here. A juvenile in this case earlier pleaded guilty to a riot charge. Sandoval was the only one accused of firing a weapon in the otherwise verbal clash between two groups at the apartment complex that day, court records show.
