Phoenix, North Valley split key Skyline doubleheader PHOENIX -- Sophomore Travis Dunlap led an offensive assault for Phoenix in its doubleheader showdown with North Valley on Saturday. However, it was the Pirates' defense that let them down in the opening game, an 11-7 loss. Phoenix won the second game 14-4 in five innings. "Errors cost us early in the game," Phoenix coach Joe Hagler said. "Three of those errors led to both of their runs in the second inning." Despite the early-inning miscues, Phoenix kept the game close behind Dunlap's two two-run homers. "Travis hit the ball real well for us today," Hagler said. "We just couldn't come up with the big hits when we had guys on." The Pirates put it all together in the nightcap behind the pitching performance of Drew Pierson. Pierson struck out 11 while yielding only six hits over five innings to pick up his third win of the season. He also became the school's all-time career leader in doubles with 26, breaking the old mark of 24 held by Aaron Hull. Dunlap picked up another home run in the second game, leaving him at 4-for-7 on the day with eight RBIs and five runs. Teammate Theron Hull went 5-for-9 overall while Andy Bartels chipped in with four hits. Phoenix (11-4, 7-4 Skyline) stands tied with North Valley and Lakeview for second place in the Skyline behind first place Mazama and Henley, each of which have 9-2 records.
