Norris, 55, apparently smashed into the rear of a sport-utility vehicle while riding his motorcycle near the South Dakota town of Keystone, Medford Councilman Skip Knight said. Knight did not personally speak with Norris, but said he was told the longtime police officer suffered broken ribs and a broken leg in the accident, which occurred sometime earlier this week. "When something like this happens to one of us, it gets around pretty fast," said Knight, who also rides motorcycles. Knight said he was told Norris collided with an SUV that did not have working brake lights. A nursing supervisor at Rapid City Regional Hospital said Norris was discharged early Friday. Knight said he was told that Norris spent part of the week in the hospital’s intensive-care unit. Advertisement Medford police Lt. Mike Moran said he was told Norris would require further medical treatment once he returned to Oregon. Norris was apparently riding a new Harley-Davidson motorcycle he had purchased upon his retirement from MPD, Moran said. Knight said the motorcycle was "totaled." Norris was in South Dakota to attend the annual Sturgis motorcycle rally. Norris retired from police work on June 30. He worked four years for Oregon State Police before joining MPD in 1978. He became a sergeant in 1984 and reached the rank of lieutenant in 1990. He was sworn in as deputy chief in 1997.
