I think this was a few years ago. — Roger K., Medford. While others have acted like it, the only one we remember saying it was Lester Maddox, the former governor of Georgia. Maddox came to national attention when black people asked to be served at his Georgia chicken restaurant the day after the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was signed into law. Maddox expressed his opinion of the new law by standing in the door of his restaurant, brandishing a gun and passing out ax handles out to white customers who supported his views. Georgia voters rewarded Maddox by making him governor in 1967, but the election was something of a fluke. Since no candidate got 50 percent in the Democratic primary, a run-off was held, and many Republicans crossed over to vote for Maddox, thinking he would be beatable in the general election.
