PUBLIC SAFETY Alleged San Diego car thief draws heavy police presence to east Medford Comment By Ryan Pfeil Mail Tribune Follow @@RyanPfeil MailTribune.com By Ryan Pfeil Mail Tribune Follow @@RyanPfeil Posted Apr. 3, 2016 at 4:48 PM By Ryan Pfeil Mail Tribune Follow @@RyanPfeil Posted Apr. 3, 2016 at 4:48 PM » Social News A Sunday afternoon call to police reporting drug use off Highway 62 in east Medford ended with at least six police cruisers responding to Lava Lanes and the arrest of a car theft suspect out of San Diego. Medford Police Cpl. Josh Schilder said police first received reports of someone using marijuana in a car parked in the 2500 block of Highway 62 at 2:39 p.m. A responding officer saw the vehicle, a gold Acura 4-door, driving northeast on the highway and followed, pulling the vehicle over near Lava Lanes at 2:48 p.m. “When he checked the plates on the vehicle, it came back as stolen out of San Diego,” Schilder said. Schilder added additional officers responded to the scene to assist with a procedure called a felony car stop, which is used in high-risk traffic stops and utilizes multiple officers and vehicles. "It’s a method we use whenever we’re taking a driver into custody in a stolen vehicle,” Schilder said. “It gives us distance from the suspect vehicle. It gives us cover and concealment.” The driver, who has not yet been identified, was taken into custody without incident.
