The article also confirmed that Smith was married to other men’s wives, the first time the church has commented on polygamy in the early days of the Mormon faith. Though polygamy was a common practice in the church’s early days, the practice has been outlawed in the U.S. since 1890. The essay is part of an effort by the Mormon church’s leadership to discuss sensitive issues that have been considered off-limits in the past. Survey says In a 2014 poll conducted by the Pew Research Center, 34 percent of Middle Easterners saw religious and ethnic hatred as one of the biggest dangers in the modern world. Meanwhile, Europeans and Americans were more worried about inequality between the poor and the rich, while Latin Americans saw nuclear weapons as the most pressing concern. Good book? “The Map of Heaven,” by Eben Alexander and Ptolemy Tompkins The author of the #1 New York Times bestseller “Proof of Heaven” teams up with the sages of times past, modern scientists, and with ordinary people who have had profound spiritual experiences to show the reality of heaven and our true identities as spiritual beings. — Simon & Schuster The word Ecumenism: A modern theological and social term referring to the effort to promote understanding and cooperation among diverse Christian groups.
