PREP FOOTBALL: Crusaders stymie Sutherlin in opener By Mail Tribune staff Updated: Sep 02, 2022 11:28 PM A A SUTHERLIN — Necessity forced St. Mary’s senior Tyson Delplanche into his first duty as a high school quarterback this season. Turns out, he was up for the challenge. Delplanche passed for three first-half touchdowns and completed all eight of his passes as the Crusaders cruised to a season-opening 35-6 win over host Sutherlin in Far West League play. “Offensively it was a great way for Tyson Delplanche to start his high school career at quarterback as a senior,” said St. Mary’s head coach Jamie Young. “He just played really smart, and we have a couple guys in Jaden Foster and TJ Flowers who can do a lot of things after the catch.” Flowers scored receiving touchdowns of 28 and 62 yards and Foster had a 4-yard TD reception to go with an 8-yard scoring run as St. Mary’s (1-0, 1-0 FWL) built a 28-0 lead in the second quarter. For his part, Delplanche finished 8-for-8 for 190 yards and no interceptions. Indiana Olson also provided a nice complement in the backfield, running 11 times for 74 yards and a 2-yard TD in the third quarter that induced a running clock for the rest of the contest. Waylon McKnight scored on a 45-yard run to prevent a shutout in the fourth quarter for Sutherlin (0-1, 0-1). “So many kids stepped up and put forth such a great defensive effort throughout the whole game,” said Young. “Sutherlin, give them credit, they played hard all the way through but our kids just did a great job with the game plan defensively and created a couple turnovers.” Shawn Ozcelik forced a fumble and Delplanche also recovered a fumble for St. Mary’s. “We’re happy with it,” Young said of the opening win. “We know we’re going to be challenged significantly in this league but we’re going to enjoy this with the kids now because that was really a great team effort.” St. Mary’s141470—35 Sutherlin0006—6 SM — Flowers 28 pass from Delplanche (Friesen kick) SM — Foster 4 pass from Delplanche (Friesen kick) SM — Flowers 62 pass from Delplanche (Friesen kick) SM — Foster 8 run (Friesen kick) SM — Olson 2 run (Friesen kick) S — McKnight 45 run (kick blocked) CASCADE CHRISTIAN 53, DOUGLAS 6: At Winston, after scoring with a long pass on the first play from scrimmage, Cascade Christian continued to roll with a ground attack spurred by Kameron Rague and Triston Wallace in a season-opening Far West League win.
