Seasoned campers sought to volunteer as camp hosts By MARK FREEMAN GRANTS PASS -- Josephine County parks officials are looking for seasoned campers to volunteer as camp hosts at nine county-owned parks. Full-time hosts are needed immediately at Tom Pearce Park and Schroeder Park. Seasonal hosts are needed at Ennis Riffle, Almeda Park, Tom Pearce Park, Indian Mary Park, and two at Lake Selmac Park. The park-host program places a person or couple at a park with a full or partial RV hook-up for free, in exchange for a string of jobs the hosts do at their particular park. Park host duties include cleaning restrooms, public relations, fee collection, light maintenance, rule enforcement and other duties. Hosts must provide their own recreational vehicle. The Josephine County Parks Department will provide hosts with hook-ups for water and electricity. Anyone interested in a host position is asked to telephone George Keller, the county's park superintendent, at 541-474-5285. The local Oregon Hunters Association chapter still has about two dozen ticket packages left for its Feb. 6 auction and banquet in Medford. It is at the Rogue Valley OHA chapter banquet that Oregon's first mule-deer tag for rifle hunting at the Hart Mountain National Wildlife Refuge will be auctioned off as a fund-raiser. The auction tag will go to the highest bidder during banquet, with bidding allowed by banquet attendees, proxy or phone. The banquet this year is at the Reston Hotel. It has sold out for each of the past several years. For ticket information, telephone chapter President Bill Kirk at 770-5672. The Oregon Access and Habitat Program will auction off the first of two rifle tags for mule-deer hunters within the Southeast Oregon refuge in almost four decades. The highest bidder at the banquet will get to take one mule deer while hunting Sept. 1 through Nov. 30 at the 280,000-acre refuge. A similar tag will be raffled off this spring, and $3 raffle tickets are currently for sale at point-of-sale computer-licensing outlets statewide. The two winners will be the first hunters since 1961 to rifle hunt for bucks at the refuge. The federal refuge will get half the proceeds from the auction and raffle for projects benefiting the refuge's deer herds. The OHA chapter, which gets 10 percent of the money raised from the auction tag, has also pledged to spend it at the refuge.
