Like minded, they played gigs at the same venues and festivals. Hernandez was a member of T-Club, a reggae and hip-hop jam band that formed in Medford and moved to Eugene before it eventually disbanded. "I also had a regular Wednesday night gig at The Osprey, and Alcyon's band Organik Time Machine and T-Club would play weekends there," Hernandez says. "Along with my own band with drummer Matthew Wells, bassist Chad Sweeley and guitarist Jeremy Kester and Evton B's Indubious, who moved here from the Bay Area about five years ago." The bands played local festivals Summer Circus in Selma, Apple Jam in Williams and the Barter Faire in Takelma. "Then Alcyon and I started playing together a lot. We started a band called Oregon Transplant," Hernandez says. "It was an all-star band with me, Alcyon, Wells, Ras Cricket and Andy Casad. When Alcyon decided to pursue solo music, Andy started The Fret Drifters, Wells started playing with Indubious, and Ras started The Rogue Fam Jam, then The Cultivators." It was as though musicians with identical dispositions came to Medford to create a new roots sound. "That's what it feels like," Hernandez says. "There's a sound that was created here that was based on roots reggae, with all of us seeing it through different perspectives." Massive hails from the East Coast — Connecticut, originally — Hernandez came from Austin, Texas, via Los Angeles, Cricket from Seattle and Wells and Casad from Southern Oregon. The catalyst was the open-mic sessions at Jackson Creek Pizza in downtown Medford. "It had a run of about five years," Hernandez says. "It was a super magical time," Massive says. "I've never experienced an open mic where we had 50 or 60 people a week who came in just to listen," Hernandez says. "It's important to point out that it was an all-ages session. A lot of young people were exposed to a high level of creative, original music and hip-hop emcees. I think we'll see a generation of young musicians during the next 10 years or so who will evolve into professional players because of that experience. "You can already see it in Sol Seed, who were a group of teenagers when that open mic started, and now they're playing all over the West Coast as a successful, independent band." Neither Hernandez or Massive wanted to be pigeonholed as reggae artists. Starting new families grounded them, and they had plenty of time to work on their music. It was Massive who coined it "new roots." Massive and Hernandez will reunite for a one-night acoustic show at 9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30, at Howiee's on Front, 40 N. Front St., Medford. There is no cover for the show. "We're big fans of each other's music," Hernandez says. He'll play cajon to accompany Massive's songs, and percussionist Matthew Kriemelman will join the duo. "The great thing about the cajon is that it gives you everything you need for dance music," Hernandez says. "It's rhythmic and funky, and our original music has groove in the guitar and groove in the vocals. There tends to be more free-spirited music when there are less musicians. We can do whatever we want with the songs."
