Considering Champion recently watched her blossom into a state champ at Ashland High just two years after picking up the sport, he should know. Three months after SOU announced the addition of the sport and two months after it gave Champion the keys to the program, Norvell put pen to paper Thursday to become the school's first-ever women's wrestling signee. Champion spent the last three seasons as Ashland High's wrestling coach and began welcoming females onto the team in 2013. Norvell — who started high school as a gymnast, was an all-conference goalkeeper for the Grizzly soccer team and is a pole vaulter on the track and field squad — was the first to sign on, and now she's done the same at SOU. "This was a very important signing for us because she's a local, a very good athlete and such a well-rounded, nice person," Champion said. "This is a person who is loved at her school, was part of the homecoming court and can go wherever she wants. It's a great start and a good sign for the program." Norvell said SOU's health and physical education program, in which she intends to major, and her experience with Champion were factors in the decision. "The thought of wrestling in college was really exciting for me and something I couldn't have imagined as an option not too long ago," she said. "Being around coach the last two years, I know it's going to be a lot of fun." Norvell originally approached Ashland High athletic director Karl Kemper at a football game during the fall of 2013 about the prospect of joining the all-boys wrestling team. Kemper liked the idea, Norvell hopped on board and others followed. Ashland started last season with seven females on the team, and ended it with Norvell winning Oregon's 138-pound girls title. "A lot of kids in high school are afraid to put themselves out there and do something that might draw attention to themselves, or might not be seen as cool, or might put them in position to fail," Kemper said at the signing ceremony. "That's what I love about Sydney. Her courage and willingness to take a risk — that's just who she is." Champion said he hopes to get 12 to 15 more wrestlers signed by the beginning of SOU's 2015-16 inaugural season. "It'll all start to play out in the next month or so," Champion said. "I just couldn't be happier that Sydney's the first one."
