The walks last about two hours and cover a mile of moderately strenuous terrain through forests and meadows along Crater Lake's rim. No previous snowshoe experience is required, and snowshoes are provided free of charge. To sign up, call the park visitor center at 541-594-3100. Cross-country ski outings Wednesdays and Saturdays: The Southern Oregon Nordic Club holds group ski outings Wednesdays and Saturdays at various locations, weather permitting. For details, see http://new.onc.org/sonc/ Klamath Basin birding trip Friday, Feb. 26: Northwest Nature Shop employee Terence Philippe will lead an all-day outing to the Lower Klamath Wildlife Refuge to look for bald eagles, rough-legged hawks, ferruginous hawks, golden eagles and waterfowl too numerous to list. Meet at Northwest Nature Shop, 154 Oak St., Ashland, at 7:30 a.m. to carpool. Birders of all skill levels are welcome. Expect cold weather. Bring binoculars, snacks and lunch. Cost is $40. Lower Table Rock hike Saturday, Feb. 27: Molly Morison, stewardship coordinator with The Nature Conservancy, along with Michael Parker, chair of the SOU Biology Department and a freshwater ecologist, will discuss the fascinating and changing nature of vernal pools, along with the plants and animals that live there. Hikers will learn about their unique adaptations and try to spot the tiny vernal pool fairy shrimp and other residents in these shallow pools. The three- to five-mile roundtrip hike follows a moderate-grade trail. The hike starts at 9 a.m. and will last three to five hours. Participants should dress for the weather and bring plenty of drinking water (no water source is available on site) and a lunch or snacks. Restrooms are available at both trailheads. Dogs, mountain bikes and OHVs are not allowed on the trail.Space is limited to 20 people. Call 541-618-2200 to reserve a spot. Agate Lake bird walk Wednesday, March 2: The Rogue Valley Audubon Society holds free bird walks at Agate Lake the first Wednesday of every month. The walks begin at 8:30 a.m. and end before noon. The slow-paced walk covers about 1.5 miles. Meet at the main parking area on the east side of the lake opposite the boat ramp. For details, see www.roguevalleyaudubon.org . Siskiyou Mountain Club Thursday, March 3: Gabe Howe, Siskiyou Mountain Club executive director, will read his story "The Botanist and His Hike to Alberg Mine," at 6 p.m. in Southern Oregon University's Meese Auditorium. The short story tells about a long hike to Rough & Ready Creek's rugged headwaters. The reading will take about 25 minutes, and there will be time to mingle afterward. Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument forum Thursday, March 3: Hear about recent field-research findings from within the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument, as well as music and poetry inspired by the monument from 7 to 9 p.m., at the Southern Oregon University Science Building auditorium, Room 151, in Ashland. Speakers include Dennis Odion, forest dynamics, fire ecology and forested ecosystem management; Henry Whitridge, vegetation change following grazing removal in the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument; Stewart Janes, Dialects, Clines and Some Random Singing: The Geography of Hermit Warbler Songs; Megan Mortimer-Lamb and Spencer Jones, Geologic mapping of the Western and High Cascade Ranges; Colin Malloy, musical exploration of the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument; Pepper Trail: Readings from his book "Cascade-Siskiyou Poems." Birds and Bird Nests Saturday, March 5: Get the facts about local birds and their habitats from local science expert John Jackson of Bugs-R-Us. What is a bird nest made with?
