Sticky business, by gum Kids display their bubble-blowing prowess By JACK MORAN Mail Tribune Ten-year-old Krystal LeVesque huffed and puffed and blew out the competition Wednesday night during a bubble-gum blowing contest at the Jackson County Fair. The Medford girl won a large cup full of Double Bubble gum and tickets to the water slide at Emigrant Lake after blowing a volleyball-sized bubble. "There’s no way I could blow a bubble bigger than that girl did," said Tyler Hansen, an impressed 9-year- old whose bubble burst early in the competition. "That was the biggest bubble I’ve ever seen," he said. "It was awesome." About 20 youngsters and a 32-year-old woman partook in the event, which was overseen by a clown named Lashes. Advertisement "Just chew and blow. It’s not so tough," Lashes instructed the group that gathered in a shady area in Chaisson Park for the event — one of many designed for youngsters during the fair’s Senior and Kids’ Day. As a veteran bubble-blower, 8-year-old Anabelle Davis of Phoenix said she had been looking forward to the contest since last summer’s fair. "I’ve been doing this since I can’t remember how long," said Anabelle, moments after losing out in the final round to Krystal. "It comes up every year." While she gave it her best shot, Anabelle found herself in a sticky situation during the finals when her bubble popped and covered her painted face in gum. She hopes to face Krystal in a 2006 rematch. "I’ll be back," Anabelle said. "I think I did pretty good this time. Last year, I just lost." Although her daughter was eliminated in the contest’s first round, 32-year-old Tami Ohlund of Eagle Point moved into the finals before she, like the other competitors, was overtaken by Krystal. "She had her gum longer than I did," said Ohlund in trying to explain how she lost to a 10-year-old. Probably the most experienced gum-chewer in the group, Ohlund had just one word to describe her experience in Wednesday’s contest. "Deflating," she said.
