He was born in Topeka, Kans. to Hugh and Helen McLaughlin. He was one of three boys, named 'Tom', 'Dick', and 'Harry'. Dick graduated from Grant High School in Portland, Ore. in 1948. He went on to graduate from the University of Oregon in 1952 and then served his country in the U.S. Air Force. Dick married Betty Jane Pasquill of Portland in 1954, and together they had five sons: Steve (Julia), of Seabeck, Wash.; Dave (Julie), of Medford, Ore.; Mark (Lori), of Sammamish, Wash.; Mike (Karen), of Sisters, Ore.; and Andy (Tami), of Bozeman, Mont. Dick and Betty moved to Medford in 1956 where Dick worked for Burroughs Corporation. In 1965 he was hired by Jackson County Federal Savings where he served as company president for many years. Dick was active in community service in and around Medford having served on a number of non-profit boards including the Medford Water Commission, Southern Oregon Public Television, the Rogue Valley Symphony, the Rogue Valley Chamber Foundation, the University Club, the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and the Oregon State Parks Foundation. He also supported many other non-profit organizations in the valley and was a supporter of the University of Oregon Alumni Association. Dick was a long-standing member of the Medford Rotary Club where he once served as president. After leaving Jackson County Federal, Dick served as the development director for the Rogue Valley Manor Foundation and he most recently sat on the board of the Asante Foundation. Dick and Betty were active members of St. Mark's Episcopal Church for 50 years, being faithful servants to the congregation there and to the community. Dick was dedicated to his wife and family, and he placed the greatest value on the many friendships he and Betty made over the years. Dick treated all those he met with kindness, respect, and a smile. Dick is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Betty; 5 sons; his brother, Harry, of Lodi, Calif.; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. The McLaughlin family would like to extend a special thanks to the entire staff of the Rogue Valley Manor Health Center and to the Providence Hospital Hospice Team for their tremendous care during the last year of Dick's life. A memorial service is being planned for a later date following the holiday season and improved travel conditions.
