AMERICAN LEGION Mavs take home state title Comment By Warren Blenkush Mail Tribune MailTribune.com By Warren Blenkush Mail Tribune Posted Aug. 3, 2015 at 2:00 AM By Warren Blenkush Mail Tribune Posted Aug. 3, 2015 at 2:00 AM » Social News GRANTS PASS — Larson Kindreich took the onus of keeping Sheldon’s potent offense at bay to help bring North Medford its third American Legion A baseball state title in four years in Sunday’s championship game. The Maverick pitcher did not disappoint by delivering a two-hitter as North Medford captured the state title with a 4-1 victory over Sheldon at Grants Pass Sports Park. “I’m really proud of our kids,” said Mavericks coach Brett Wolfe, who nabbed his fourth title as skipper of the summer squad. “This tournament is a five-day grind and they battled and competed every single day. Their two goals this season were to become better baseball players and better people, and they did those. You have to learn how to deal with adversity and they did that very well as well as learning to sacrifice and be selfless.” The Mavericks’ next destination is in Logan, Utah, where they will compete for a regional title, Aug. 7-11. Kindreich needed just 75 pitches over seven innings to get the job done for the Mavericks (44-8-1). He allowed one unearned run in the third inning, walked two and struck out three. “Larson, he’s mentally tough and he prepares himself, and he knows how to pitch,” said Wolfe. “He just has good command and good poise. He’s able to get ahead of hitters and he’s very mature at reading players’ swings. He throws it in the strike zone and knows where to throw effectively.” With as well as Kindreich pitched, the Irish were the ones to get on the board first with a run in the top of the third. The Mavericks, however, were quick to respond with three runs in the bottom of the frame. Bennett Rodgers and Kasey Buchanan both collected RBI singles, and Barry Hunt brought home Rodgers with a sacrifice fly. In the fourth inning, Dallas Casebier, who finished 2-for-2, used a sacrifice fly to get Tyler Oedekoven across the plate and bolster the Mavericks’ lead to 4-1.
