Two deputies attempted to revive the child until medical personnel arrived at the scene. The child was transported to Rogue Regional Medical Center and later pronounced dead. “It was a rough week for our guys and more so for the families,” sheriff’s Capt. Nathan Sickler said. Sickler said the girl’s name is being withheld until all family members are notified. The Jackson County Medical Examiner will conduct an autopsy on the child. “Our preliminary investigation indicates the child wandered off from a group and fell into a creek,” he said. Deputies also responded to another tragedy last week when a Butte Falls woman and her 6-year-old daughter were killed on Butte Falls Highway when the woman's minivan crossed the center line and collided head-on with a log truck. Two boys and a girl were also severely injured in the crash. Sickler said the drowning case, which was reported at 3:58 p.m. Saturday, is still under investigation and may be referred to the Jackson County District Attorney’s Office for review. He said that at this point it is too early to tell exactly what happened or whether any charges would be filed. “We’re going to wait for all the results before we make any determination as to what occurred,” Sickler said. Unfortunately, accidental drownings do occur from time to time in Jackson County, Sickler said. There have been about a half dozen child drownings in Jackson County since 2000, according to Mail Tribune archives In 2009, a 2-year-old girl drowned in Eagle Point after climbing out of bed and going into the family pool without her parents’ knowledge. The pool where the child drowned was an above-ground pool in the backyard. Drownings remain the second leading cause of injury-related death among children under 15, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
