The win elevated Crater (6-18, 3-9 MWL) into a tie for fifth place with Eagle Point in the MWL standings while the Highlanders (4-20, 2-10) finished in the cellar of the seven-team league. The Comets will travel to Mid-Willamette Conference third-place Lebanon (15-8) for a 5A state play-in game on Wednesday. Crater’s Robbie Henderson came up with a stellar defensive stop with North Eugene trailing by two points and in possession of the ball with 15 seconds left. Not only did Henderson, a sophomore forward, force a North Eugene miss, but he got the rebound and was fouled. He made 1 of 2 free throws with 1.2 seconds left to seal the win. Crater trailed 21-14 at halftime but changed the momentum by outscoring the Highlanders 18-6 in the third quarter behind the shooting of Mason Vranes and Tanner Mallams. The Comets held a seven-point advantage in the final quarter before North Eugene rallied. Vranes led the Comets with 12 points and sophomore Kiefer Edwards contributed 10 rebounds and eight points. “I like the fact we got down in the first half but came back with a lot of fight,” said Crater first-year coach Chris Schmerbach. “We had no doubt we could get it done. We haven’t had a lot of leads this year so we had to figure it out at the end.” NORTH EUGENE (38): Hill 9, Lannom 6, Snyder 8, Woodworth 2, Proudfit 8, Schneider 5, Riggs 0. Totals: 14-45 9-13 38. Smith, Wise. NORTH EUGENE 53, CRATER 33: At Eugene, Crater could not compensate for missing offensive leaders Destiny Fahndrich and Cheyenne Scott in the MWL game to determine third place. Fahndrich and Scott, who account for 24 points a game, are out for medical reasons. The inexperienced Crater (15-9, 7-5 MWL) lineup got off to a shaky start, falling behind 7-0 after the opening two minutes. Junior guard Mallory Heard led the Comets with 10 points to go with five assists and five rebounds. Evie Kent, Crater’s junior post, added eight points and six rebounds. Crater will host Lebanon (13-11), the fifth-place team from the Mid-Willamette Conference, in a state play-in game at 6 p.m. Tuesday. CRATER (33): Ryerson 5, Gray 2, E. The Eagles (6-17, 2-10 MWL), who were tied at 21-all until the Millers’ run, finished in sixth place in the MWL and will face Central in a Class 5A play-in game Tuesday.
