Warriors surprise Blazers for first win Portland falls 105-100 in double-overtime The Associated Press OAKLAND, Calif. -- Chris Mills got Terry Cummings' attention just in time. After taking a pass from Cummings, Mills hit a game-tying 3-pointer in the final moments of overtime and then had a go-ahead jumper in the second OT as the Golden State Warriors beat the Portland Trail Blazers 105-100 Sunday night. Cummings had rebounded Tony Delk's missed 3-point try and began driving the baseline as if he was about to lay it up. "It was momentary insanity," Cummings said. "But I realized we needed the 3. Chris was screaming and he was so wide open. I think that's the shot that got us there." Mills said he was confident in the shot from the moment it left his hands. "I did want it," he said. "I saw my guy. He was out on me, then he turned his head and I was able to cut baseline and get open in the corner. T.C., like the veteran he is, found me open." It was the first win of the season for Golden State after opening with five losses, including a double-overtime defeat to Dallas on Feb. 7. "We've been working very hard and our work is starting to pay dividends," said John Starks, who came to Golden State with Cummings and Mills from the New York Knicks in the Latrell Sprewell trade. Cummings led the Warriors with 24 points, including six points in the second overtime when Golden State outscored Portland 11-6. Starks added 18 points, Donyell Marshall 14 and Mills 13. Arvydas Sabonis led Portland with 23 points and 17 rebounds. Damon Stoudamire added 18, Isaiah Rider had 17 and Rasheed Wallace 16. "The main reason they won is because they came ready to play," Stoudamire said. "I thought we played all right. We didn't play a great game, but we were still in it at the end. We had our chances to win, but we probably didn't have the energy that we wanted.'' Trailing 93-89 in the first OT after a three-point play by Stoudamire, Golden State got a 14-foot jumper from Muggsy Bogues to get within two. Stoudamire was then fouled on a drive through the lane by Starks, who fouled out, and made one of his two free throws with 18 seconds left. Delk missed a 3-point try, Cummings got the rebound and shoveled a pass to the right corner for Mills, who drained the 3-pointer with four seconds left to force the second overtime. After trading baskets, Mills hit a 17-foot jumper to put Golden State up 98-96 with 2:25 remaining. Cummings had a tip-in and a pair of free throws sandwiched around Stoudamire's 8-foot runner to keep Golden State in front 102-98. Jim Jackson made a pair of free throws with 49 seconds remaining and Portland had a chance to tie it up again, but Wallace missed a turnaround jumper and Mills secured the rebound and the game. Portland tied it at 86-all when Sabonis made one of two free throws with 4.8 seconds remaining in regulation. Both teams had a chance to win it, but Golden State turned it over immediately after an inbounds pass and Portland couldn't get a shot off in the final moments.
