Joe VonDoloski, the executive director of the school, said the school can obtain services such as sewer and water without being part of the city. City taxes and fees would increase the cost of building the school, which he estimated could be in the $4 million to $5 million range. “We don’t need any of the city services,” he said. “We’re trying to appeal the requirement to annex.” The property, at the corner of North Ross Lane and Rossanley Drive, previously belonged to Wes Howard, who died in 2003 at age 87 and donated the land for a children’s park. Most of the park is undeveloped except for a soccer field and small parking lot. The annexation issue will be debated at 10:30 a.m. Monday before a Jackson County land-use hearings officer in the auditorium of the Jackson County Offices, 10 S. Oakdale Ave., Medford. The Wes Howard Foundation has offered to donate five acres of its 60-acre sports park at Ross Lane and Rossanley Drive to Logos for a 30,000-square-foot school that would serve about 900 home-schooled students, who would take some of their needed coursework there. The YMCA was previously interested in building on the park but ultimately dropped the idea. The charter school opened in fall 2010 at 400 Earhardt St., formerly Medford Opportunity School. At the time, nearly 300 students attended the school, which offers online and on-campus classes, as well as support for home-schooled students. Since then, enrollment has more than tripled, and the school has outgrown the 9,500-square-foot facility. In an earlier story, VonDoloski said the new school facility would include a library, computer room, college and career room, kids room, 12 to 15 classrooms and about 20 offices. Logos’ current facility has six classrooms and 10 offices. In the spring of this year, he said "in a perfect world" the school would move into its new site in three years. Jim Huber, director of the Medford Planning Department, said the city and county have a long-standing agreement about growth management, and this property is in the city’s urban growth boundary, which would mean it is being considered for future annexation. “The property is in the urbanizable area,” he said. Huber said the city hasn’t calculated whether there would be a sizable difference in cost to build a school if the property were annexed.
