Medford house has people looking twice Mail Tribune / Bob Pennell Brian Koeninger, 17, hauls debris away from this house in east Medford that has lost its middle section during a construction project that's caught the attention of neighbors and passersby. Passersby are doing a double take at a house on the corner of Modoc and Dellwood avenues in Medford. Some people think the center of it was burned out, others that it is two separate houses, while still others can't make heads or tails of it. The reality is much more mundane. David and Elahe Young and their two children loved the location across the street from Hoover Elementary School, but wanted to expand the original 2,129-square-foot structure. Contractor Gary Dorris and a team of workers cut out the middle of the house to pour new footings to support a second story, which will expand the overall living area to 4,167 square feet. Elahe Young said she and her husband wanted to save as much of the original house as possible to help cut costs. But neighbors have wondered about the unusual configuration, where the south end of the house has been separated from the north end. "One asked me, 'Which end of the house do you live in?' " said Young. Construction worker Lance Adams said, "We've got a whole fan club stopping and talking to us every day." Workers were already putting up the walls on the addition by Monday afternoon, bringing the two halves of the house back together. Construction is expected to be completed by late January or early February.
