JACKSON COUNTY LIBRARIES Jackson County library director receives Mover and Shaker Award Award honors Westergard's work in Nevada Comment By Ryan Pfeil Mail Tribune Follow @@RyanPfeil MailTribune.com By Ryan Pfeil Mail Tribune Follow @@RyanPfeil Posted Mar. 21, 2016 at 4:55 PM By Ryan Pfeil Mail Tribune Follow @@RyanPfeil Posted Mar. 21, 2016 at 4:55 PM » Social News The director of Jackson County's 15 libraries has received a national award from the Library Journal for a fundraising and program development campaign she spearheaded during her work in Nevada. Tammy Westergard was one of 54 library officials across the U.S. to receive the Mover and Shaker Award, according to a story that ran in the Journal last week . The award is given to librarians and other library officials "from around the world who are innovative, creative and making a difference," according to the Journalwebsite. "I feel really grateful," said Westergard, who was hired to the Jackson County post in June 2015. "It takes a team. I know that there were a lot of people involved in this work, and I see that willingness to work here in Jackson County." The Journalsays she oversaw multiple workforce development and technology projects in Carson City while serving as interim library director. Those efforts included a grant for a library computing center and another for an advanced manufacturing certification program. "The dividends are paying off now, and our library is an unprecedented partner with local public schools, businesses and the community," a statement from Nevada library trustee Pam Graber said. "Tammy's efforts enabled young people to keep up, and adults to level up in ways that never existed before." Jackson County library officials said Westergard has brought that same mind-set to her current role. She's been working on a multiyear plan with area businesses, educators, social service workers and people in the arts to implement some of the same types of technology and business development programs. "It's really exciting. It recognizes that libraries are a magnificent blend of the old and the new," Westergard said. Reach reporter Ryan Pfeil at 541-776-4468 or [email protected] .
