Duane Eugene Bond, 31, is accused of killing 78-year-old Jerald Wesley Eigenbrod, who was found dead Friday evening at a residence at 714 South Side Road, according to a news release. Details about the killing, including manner of death, and how Bond was identified as a suspect have yet to be released, at least officially. However, according to the Daily Courier's daily log of police activity, on Tuesday Bond was treated at Asante Three Rivers Medical Center for stab wounds that he refused to explain. He was arrested at that time for failing to appear in court on a theft charge. It remains unclear if he was released or was still in jail when Eigenbrod's body was found Friday. Failure-to-appear warrants are an endemic problem in the budget-strapped Josephine County criminal justice system. Earlier on Saturday, a spokesman for OSP confirmed reports that an active homicide investigation was underway in the Murphy area south of Grants Pass. OSP is leading the investigation because the understaffed Sheriff's Office does not have a detective unit — it does not even have 24-hour patrol coverage. Sgt. Kyle Hove told the Daily Courier the case began as a medical aid call at 6:42 p.m. Friday and that at some point — he was not sure when — the aid call “turned into a homicide.” He said at that time there was a single victim and that the person’s name was being withheld pending notification of next of kin. The address of the crime scene also was withheld. However, the Daily Courier was able to pinpoint the location to a driveway in the 700 block of South Side Road. That included 714 South Side Road. The driveway was marked “No Trespassing.” An OSP forensic van left the scene around noon Saturday. Several pickup trucks with “Search and Rescue K-9” decals were parked nearby. The location is behind the Copeland gravel yard in Murphy, a stone’s throw from the Williams Highway. Neighbors were in the dark. “We’re right here and we don’t even know about it,” one neighbor told the Courier. Another resident on Long Acres Road, across from the driveway, said the same thing. The homicide is the first of the year in Josephine County and the first since October, when a Northern California man was found shot to death in his SUV at Lake Selmac. Two men from Texas are in custody in that case, which authorities believe was a drug ripoff. A third suspect remains at-large.
