Vanderhoff has college career halted Mike Vanderhoffs college basketball career has come to an abrupt end. The former South Medford High standout, who has played for Western Oregon University the past two seasons, was denied his senior season of eligibility by the NCAA earlier this month for having played in an exhibition game in November of 1997 while competing for Portland State. Vanderhoff transferred to Western Oregon the following season and became one of the greatest players in the schools history. He averaged 23.5 points during the 1998-99 season and was named an NAIA third-team All-American. Last season , after the Wolves joined the Division III ranks, Vanderhoff averaged 21.4 points. He was the top vote-getter in the Little All-Northwest team balloting, a squad made up of NCAA Division II , Division III and NAIA players in the Pacific Northwest, each of the past two seasons. Vanderhoff had made an appeal to the NCAA, claiming the game between Portland State and the Albury Bandits was not an official contest. But the appeal was denied. ``I dont think the ruling was fair at all, Western Oregon coach Tom Kelly said. ``To have a game that doesnt count in any kind of standings or statistics cost Mike a year of eligibility seems really unfair. Obituaries | Sports | Business | Classifieds | Tempo | Prime Times | So Oregon Sites | Outdoor Journal | Subscribe | Contact | Movies | Advertise | Real Estate Showcase | Archive | Editorials | Letters to the editor | Religion | Wake-up Call | NIE | Cyber Chef | Job Network | So Oregon Weather | WSJ Northwest | Forums | AP Wire | AP Money | F.A.Q. | Awards Ottaway Newspapers, Inc.
