Lucas Benjamin Molina, 25, admitted in Jackson County Circuit Court that he fired a 9 mm handgun at Pedro Sanchez-Camacho on Prune Street that night. Christian Jonathan Torres, 19, admitted he was behind the wheel of his sister's Honda Civic coupe, driven without her permission, when the shot was fired. The single gunshot didn't hit anybody. The shooting was in retaliation against John Rocha, the ex-boyfriend of Torres' sister, who allegedly menaced her with an authentic-looking BB gun earlier that night, Deputy District Attorney Marco Boccato said. Sanchez-Camacho is an associate of Rocha, who faces a felony charge of endangering a person protected by a restraining order for intimidating her, court documents show. "The only reason you're not in prison the rest of your life is because you missed," Circuit Judge David Hoppe told Molina before sentencing him to 35 months in prison. Molina pleaded guilty to felony charges of attempted first-degree assault and felon in possession of a firearm. He has multiple prior felony convictions, court records show, including attempted assault and riot charges stemming from a gang fight in September 2009 that left 24-year-old Marco Antonio Diaz dead. Molina was sentenced to 4½ years in prison in 2010 in the case. Hoppe said in court he was the prosecutor in Molina's 2009 gang-fight case. Hoppe offered Molina the opportunity to reschedule the hearing with a different judge. Hoppe proceeded on grounds he'd follow the stipulated plea agreement, but expressed disappointment at Molina's list of gang-related felonies. In September 2014, Molina brandished a knife in a gang fight in the area of Main and Grape streets and yelled "Norteño," court documents show. Hoppe expressed concern that Molina was going to continue his pattern of gang violence. "Is this over? Are you done?" Hoppe asked. "You're just going to let go of the past, right?" "Yes, sir," Molina said. Sanchez-Camacho didn't appear at the hearing. Torres was sentenced to 16 months in prison followed by three years of post-prison supervision.
