Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend January 13, 2006 SOU hires associate vice president for marketing, public relations By ANITA BURKE Mail Tribune Southern Oregon University has hired its first associate vice president for marketing and public relations. Barbara Porter, who has three decades’ experience in journalism and public relations, plans to start work at SOU in March, said Lynn Green, an SOU communications coordinator. Porter most recently worked as assistant vice president for media, marketing and communication at the George Washington Medical Center at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. She’s also served as director of public affairs at George Washington University, where she coordinated outreach by the university’s president. SOU announced it would add a new high-level marketing post last fall after officials called for renewed marketing efforts to help reverse enrollment declines. The new post will oversee marketing, media relations, university publications and Web presence, while ensuring a consistent portrayal of the school, the job announcement said. The reported salary range for the job is $75,000 to $90,000. Porter’s previous experience includes more than 20 years as a news anchor, news director, business editor, and White House correspondent and reporter for several radio networks. Advertisement Porter also has provided freelance public relations services for D.C.-area nonprofits and media training, speechwriting and industrial voice-over work. Porter and her husband, Jerry Green, plan to move to the Ashland area with their three children. Porter’s oldest son, a high school senior, discovered SOU online while researching West Coast universities where he could study theater. He’s applied and been accepted, but hasn’t decided whether to attend SOU after graduation, Green said. As the family looked into the school, Porter found the job she was interested in, Green said. "It is a vibrant, collegial university in a wonderful community," Porter said in the press release announcing her hiring. "There is a deep commitment to the students and to delivering best value education in addition to a talented, energetic faculty. I look forward to the challenges of this new position and in working with the university leadership to move SOU to the next level."
