The Greater Medford Multicultural Fair — a day of music, dancing and food set from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27 — returns to Alba Park, on the corner of West Main and Holly streets in downtown Medford. Past fairs have been held in Hawthorne Park. Admission is free. Performers and food vendors representing a variety of cultures will be featured, along with educational booths and lots of activities for children. Medford’s parks department will be on hand with a jump house and art projects for kids, and face painting will be available. LIFE Art, a program that engages at-risk youth in art, will be at the fair displaying its three-sided mural depicting civil rights leaders Mahatma Ghandi, Martin Luther King Jr. and Cesar Chavez.  Students from the University of Oregon’s Sustainable Cities Initiative will share findings from their collaboration with the city of Medford about the needs of the community. Performers scheduled this year include dancers representing the styles of Japan, India, Mexico, Hawaii, Tahiti, Fiji and Samoa. Native Americans and a group playing Swiss alphorns also are scheduled, as is an interactive zumba session. Food vendors include Peruvian Point, Taqueria El Gallo and Wasana’s Thai. Look for the Swiss Alphorns, Sakura Dance Group, Spanish duo Antonio Reyes and Jesus Insunza, Halau Hula o Na Pua o Hawaii Nei, Ballet Folklorico Ritmo Alegre, Ayesha's Oasis belly dancers, dancers from the New Life Samoan Church and classical Indian dance by Dakini Rose Devadasi-Odissi. Sakura Dance group is from Josephine County and has danced at the multicultural fair since its beginning. Ballet Folklorico will perform dances from various regions in Mexico.  The fair is held every fall to share cultures of the region, says one of its organizers, Debra Lee. The goal of the fair is to build community by bringing us all together to share our cultures in a way that leads to broader understanding, mutual respect and further dialogue. About 4,000 people attend every year. Find out more at www.rvmcf.com or www.facebook.com/greatermedfordmulticultural.
