Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Oct. 9, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Oct. 9, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News Oct. 9, 1915 FEDERAL GRAND JURY RETURNS 12 INDICTMENTS Twelve indictments — one for horse-stealing, one for impersonating a federal officer and ten for selling whiskey to Indians, on introducing it upon the Klamath reservation — were returned by the federal grand jury this morning as the result of a week's work. Benton Bowers of Ashland acts as foreman of the grand jury. One Medford man — Bob Anderson, well known locally — is among those indicted for selling whiskey to Indians. He is alleged to have quartered with Miller George, brother of Jim George, serving a life sentence at McNeil's island for the murder of a fellow tribesman. Other Whiskey Charges The others indicted on the whiskey charges are: Dan Connor, A.P. Rider, Aaron Schuler, Earl Pratt, David Alexander, Robert Ridley, Archie Malier, James Graham and George Berry. The bail of all indicted was fixed at $1,000. For $15 worth of groceries, he secured from Cecil Hunt of Eugene, upon the alleged represenations that he was a federal officer, Thorne Dahl, alias Tim Doyle, alias Timothy Doyle, alias Dale Thorne, was indicted. Dahl, alias three names, is alleged to have posed as a secret service man for six weeks in the Willamette valley. Ramon Morales was indicted for the alleged theft of a horse, bridle and saddle, from an Indian living on the Klamath reservation. The grand jury resumed its session this afternoon. Brown Murder Trial The defense in the case of Joe Brown, on trial for the murder of Eugene Isaacs, called its first witness at the beginning of the afternoon session, the state closing its main case at noon. Evidence showing that the defendant and the deceased were at outs over the rights relative to a neighboring road was shown, the evidence of the state tending to show that the accused had been the aggressor. Practically all of the witnesses called are Indians. The defense will attempt to show self-defense. The case will be completed next week. The murder trial is not brightened by any sensational features, and is "dry." Despite this, the courtroom was comfortable filled with the morbidly curious. Jim Brown, the defendant, manifests but a passing interest in the trial.
