Phoenix edges South Umpqua PHOENIX It wasnt pretty, but a wins a win. The Phoenix High football team took that motto to heart Friday during an 8-7 non-conference win over South Umpqua at Jack Woodward Stadium. The Pirates nearly fumbled the game away, coughing it up six times, but got an Eric Kessler 3-yard touchdown run with just over two minutes left for the win. "Theyre (South Umpqua) a pretty good football team," said Phoenix coach Joe Hagler. "I wanted to put some points on the board tonight, but to come back and score like that after all the negative things was great." The Lancers were held in check most of the game but sophomore quarterback Ryan Savage turned a broken play into a 55-yard scoring jaunt to post a 7-0 halftime lead. "That was kind of a back-breaker because we had controlled the game," said Hagler. "They only had two first downs in the first half." Phoenix took the second-half kickoff to the South Umpqua 10-yard line but committed one of its most costly turnovers. Kessler squirted through the middle of the line and dove toward the end zone but lost the ball at the 1. The Lancers recovered for a touchback. Kessler redeemed himself with the winning score to cap off a 107-yard day on the ground on 15 carries. Savage finished with 105 yards through the air but connected on just 10 of 27 passes and threw two interceptions.
