Well-rounded Eagles sweep twin bill EAGLE POINT - Flashing the ability to win both low- and high-scoring games, the Eagle Point baseball team swept a home doubleheader from Yreka, Calif., Tuesday. Sophomore pitcher Ron Depuy had an effective day in relief for the Eagles (3-0 overall), earning his first save in Game 1 and his first victory in Game 2. In all, Depuy pitched 4� innings of one-run ball. Junior Daniel Chavez started Game 1 and fired for five innings, striking out five and allowing one earned run and three hits to improve to 2-0. Eagle Point junior left fielder Kevin Gray drew a bases-loaded walk in the fourth for the go-ahead run in Game 1. Sophomore catcher Ricky O'Callahan scored on the play, and he had reached on an earlier error that had scored junior designated hitter Carl Christian for the tying run. In Game 2, the Eagles erupted for a season-high 15 hits, scoring at least one run in all six times at-bat. Junior right fielder Mark Farrell (3-for-4, four RBIs), junior shortstop Chris Boyd (2-for-5, including a bases-loaded triple), senior center fielder Brian Sands (2-for-5 with two runs scored), Gray (2-for-5 with three runs) and senior third baseman Jason Dunbar (2-for-5 with three runs) led the Eagle Point attack. "All but two guys in our starting lineup had hits, so it was kind of an all-around team effort," said Eagle Point assistant coach Rob Cowden. "The thing that we've seen is the kids are showing some good poise for being this early in the year. They're playing at an even keel without too many peaks or valleys." ROGUE RIVER 6, MYRTLE POINT 1 - At Rogue River, sophomore Matt Frederick earned the pitching win and helped his own cause with a three-run, first-inning home run to push Rogue River to 2-0 overall. Frederick finished 2-for-2 with two walks at the plate and allowed one run in five innings of work on the mound, permitting no walks and striking out one in running his record to 1-0. Hidden Valley's best scoring opportunity came in the fourth inning when Tyler Mason's two-out double gave the Mustangs runners on second and third, but Hidden Valley (0-3) failed to score. Jamie Williams pitched a two-hit shutout in the opener, fanning five and walking one. She also was 3-for-3 with a triple and three RBIs. Kristina Bateman was 2-for-2 with three walks and three runs in the nightcap as the Eagles improved to 3-0.
