Medford cranked out nine hits — four more than the host Pippins — but stranded 11 runners on base to drop to 21-24 overall. Yakima Valley improved to 23-22 in avoiding the series sweep by the Rogues, who have a day off before facing WCL South-leading Bend at 6:35 p.m. Friday at Harry & David Field. Yakima Valley touched starting pitcher Max Bethell for two runs on three hits in his three innings of work and that proved to be enough. The Pippins used an RBI single by Ryan Lillie that brought home Mitch Skaggs to strike first in the first inning, then tacked on an insurance run in the third inning after Corey Morris reached on a leadoff single and was later brought in by Skaggs. Bethell struck out two and walked one, while Gabe Gentner went four innings in relief and gave up just two hits and struck out one and walked two. Derron Davis and Nathan Etheridge each paced the Rogues with two hits, while Billy Fredrick increased his club-record hitting streak to 15 games. American Legion A NORTH MEDFORD 11, WILSON 0: At Grants Pass, Larson Kindreich did a little bit of everything for the North Medford Mavericks, which dominated Wilson in the opening round of the American Legion A state tournament at Grants Pass Sports Park. From the mound, Kindreich allowed just four baserunners — all via singles. He also struck out eight for the Mavericks (41-7-1), who advanced to face Centennial at 4 p.m. today in the winner’s bracket. Kindreich also went 2-for-2 with three runs scored and an RBI while Tyler Oedekoven finished 3-for-4 with four RBIs and a run scored. Softball ALMADEN 7, CRATER 6, 8 inn.: Crater’s Hailee Hillyer drove in four runs but the Almaden Lightning of California were able to rally for the win in the top of the eighth inning during the second round of pool play in the ASA 12B Western National girls fastpitch tournament at U.S. Cellular Community Park. With the international tiebreaker rule in effect, in which a runner starts the inning off on second base for both teams, the Lightning were able to advance their runner home and the Comets were unable to match. Hillyer went 2-for-4 and Saith Cardova added an RBI double for the Comets, who led 6-1 before Almaden’s comeback. The Comets take on the LGCS Magic at 9 a.m. today at U.S. Cellular. Fisher shot an even-par 72 after recording the third lowest score of the field with a 5-under 67 on Day 1. The Oregon squad carded a 1-over-par 217 in the second round but are still in the hunt despite Southern California shooting 13-under and vaulting from fourth place to first with an 11-stroke lead over Oregon and Wyoming. Oregon birdied hole Nos. 6, 8, 15 and 17 but recorded three bogeys and one double bogey. Oregon’s other members include incoming senior Bryce Wortman of Seaside High School, as well as Crescent Valley High junior Kevin Geniza and Spencer Tibbits of Fort Vancouver High School in Vancouver, Wash. Girls Golf JUNIOR AMERICA’S CUP: At Cheyenne, Wyo., Crater High School’s Danielle Giles posted a 7-over-par 79 to help the Oregon team maintain fifth place in the second round of the USGA Junior America’s Cup at Cheyenne Country Club. The event features 18 teams from the Western States, Canada and Mexico playing 54 holes of stroke play. Giles improved her Day 1 score by four strokes, although the field as a whole lowered its scores as well. Oregon, which sports a two-day total of 462 at 30-over-par, was led by Ellie Slama’s 72 while Ellen Secor shot a 75 and Taylor Hartley 78. Mexico leads second-place Hawaii by five strokes with a 12-over 444.
