"Oh, now I got more than just lint in there," Weaver said, pointing at his navel and laughing. Moments later he rung out his T-shirt and dirty brown water gushed out. "We kind of smell like cow poop right now," Swanson said, laughing as she found another speck of mud in her hair. The five had just completed the Redneck Mud Run and Obstacle Course as a team, one of the events kicking off the Redneck Games of Oregon. The mashup of military-style obstacles and an abundance of mud included a tire climb and a mud crawl. The team was there in celebration of Swanson's 39th birthday. "We just wanted to get dirty," Swanson said. "It sounded fun." Eagle Rock Elementary School teachers Nicole Bryner and Heather Marrs were among the first participants in the morning 5K fun run. Despite a mishap, the two enjoyed themselves. "I got stung by bees," Bryner said, laughing, then noted that organizers were genuinely surprised. "They've been coming in with bulldozers all week." Inside the arena Saturday were more than 40 country-themed carnival and fair events with country twists, such as "Best Dressed Redneck Baby," "Seed Spitt'n," "Bobbing for Pig Feet, "Hillbilly Boxing," and a variety of competitive eating contests, from wings to pie to pizza. "We got what amounts to five events at one shot going," Matt Phillips of Rogue Promotions said Friday while orchestrating vendors' locations and assisting with event setup. Phillips organized the event with business partner Doug Pfaff. "We'll have people doing redneck horseshoes," Phillips said. "That is, instead of regular horseshoes they'll be using toilet seats." Prizes ranged from the absurd — such as a gold toilet seat trophy — to the practical — such as a trucking scholarship from Ashland Trucking. "They're giving away a $3,600 scholarship to get your CDL (commercial driver's license)," Phillips said. Phillips said Redneck Games events in other areas tend to be low-key, but he sought to expand its appeal, first by adding live music and then snowballing events to build something with wide appeal. "We want to bring out the inner child in the adult again," Pfaff said. Another participant in the obstacle course was 10-year-old Eagle Rock student Brionna Fuller, who was rinsing off with her mother, Lori Fuller. They were part of the team "Chicks, Hens and Roosters," made up of teaching staff at Eagle Rock. "She did everything," Lori Fuller said, beaming. Brionna briefly described "crawling like a bear" through the mud crawl and over tires, then eyed the rinsing tank again. "I want to jump in the water," she said to her mother. "OK. Go. Have fun," Lori Fuller said. "She's going to sleep good tonight." Redneck Games events continue until 10 p.m. today at the Jackson County Expo, 1 Peninger Road; 4x4 motorsport events such as timed races and a rock crawl will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 4, at White City Hoover Pond Sports Park near Highway 140 and Lakeview Drive.
