Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend September 10, 2005 Ashland saves best for last in win over Rex Putnam By JOE ZAVALA for the Mail Tribune ASHLAND — Ashland High football coach Charlie Hall wanted his team to face some adversity, but he also wanted a win. Friday night, he got both. Dylan Steeves scored the game-winning touchdown with 5:23 to go and Josh Cornelius caught six passes for 140 yards as the Grizzlies overcame an eight-point, fourth-quarter deficit to beat Rex Putnam 29-25 at Walter A. Phillips Field. "I couldn’t have scripted it any better," Hall said. "You want to test your team, you want to make sure that you can write the ending as well, and this is a great ending as far as getting the kids an opportunity, to challenge them in a come-from-behind situation and see what they’re made out of. They passed that test." Steeves took a handoff up the middle, bounced outside and then outraced everyone to the end zone to give the Grizzlies (2-0) the lead for good. After the two-point conversion attempt failed, Rex Putnam returned the ensuing kickoff to its own 37. The Kingsmen worked the ball to the 50 before stalling. On third-and-eight, Ashland defensive lineman Jamal Pautsch read the screen play perfectly and intercepted Kurt Snowley’s pass at the line of scrimmage. Advertisement Ashland ran out the final 3:37 with seven consecutive running plays. The Grizzlies ended up with 190 yards rushing. The dramatic comeback capped a wild game that included three fumbles, three interceptions, over 700 yards of total offense — 431 by Ashland and 328 by Rex Putnam — and two onside kick recoveries by Ashland’s Robby Bruce. The second recovery, which followed a 20-yard boot over the first line of defense down the right sideline, gave the Grizzlies the ball back with 7:05 to go. On the previous possession, Ashland used what has become a potent combination to finally break out of its second-half funk. Sam Littleton threw a perfect pass to a streaking Cornelius, who hauled in a 37-yard touchdown grab, his second of the day. Snowley tossed a 15-yard touchdown pass to Jared Forell early in the third quarter to give the Kingsmen their first lead of the game at 23-17, and Forell took a high snap in for a broken play two-point conversion. Ashland faltered on its next three possessions, but woke up just in time. "Rex Putnam did a nice job of picking apart our defense a little bit," Hall said, "but at the end of the game the offense had to get a score and they did, and the defense had to get some stops and they did."
