But neither of those hits drove in any runs, and Lakeside Recovery — out of Bellevue, Washington — lost 6-1 in 13 innings. In a rematch Saturday, Watanabe made the most of his hits and kept his team's hopes for a regional championship alive. Watanabe went 2-for-4 with a three-run double and a three-run, inside-the-park home run as Lakeside Recovery won 11-6 over Medford at Powers Field. Lakeside Recovery (36-17) handed Medford (41-13) its first loss of the tournament, and it will play Gillette, Wyoming, (63-23) at noon PDT today. Despite the loss, the Mustangs advanced to the title game for the second straight year — it was runner-up in 2014 — and plays the winner of today's first game at 3:30 p.m. PDT. Watanabe's double in the top of the fifth was part of a six-run inning for Lakeside Recovery. Only one of those runs was earned. His home run came with two outs in the top of the ninth, and that inning also started with a Medford error. Medford left fielder Bryce Rogan tried to make a diving catch, but came up short. Those two innings were the only ones Lakeside Recovery scored. "Throughout this tournament, we get guys on but couldn't get them in," Watanabe said. "Sometimes it takes just one guy to get them in and it keeps rolling and rolling. I'm glad I could get it started." "I thought (the Medford player) caught the ball on my double, and with the home run, I think that's the farthest I've ever hit a baseball." Only one of Lakeside Recovery's 11 runs were earned due to three Medford errors. The Mustangs trailed 6-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth but scored five runs over three of the next four innings. A sacrifice fly by Medford center fielder Micah Brown tied the game 6-6 in the bottom of the eighth. But two of Medford's three outs in that inning were due to base running mistakes. "It was a frustrating game," Medford manager Nate Mayben said. "We left a lot of guys on base (10). We didn't do a good job of putting the ball in play hard with runners in scoring position. Give them credit for keeping us off-balance at the plate. "But only one of their runs was earned. We made three big errors. We don't run down some balls and make some good reads in the outfield that we normally make, and that's what's going to happen. Baseball is a funny game, and the second you lose focus, stuff like that's going to happen." Cole Carder was 3-for-4 with two runs scored, and Rogan was 3-for-5 with two RBIs for the Mustangs. Jordan Ragan, Tate Cowden and Jared Evans all went 2-for-4 and Eric Carlson 2-for-5. Despite the loss, Medford is just one win away from a regional title and a trip to the World Series. Mayben said that his two main pitchers today will be Cody Coggins and Jordan Ragan.
