RAIDER ROUNDUP SOU ousted in shootout against Corban MailTribune.com Writer Posted Nov. 7, 2014 @ 2:00 am Posted Nov. 7, 2014 @ 2:00 am » Social News SALEM — An all-too-familiar story line haunted the Southern Oregon soccer team until the very end and chased the Raiders out of the Cascade Conference tournament on a rainy Thursday afternoon. Playing at Willamette University, third-seeded Corban defeated sixth-seeded SOU in the seventh round of penalty kicks after 90 minutes of regulation and 20 minutes of overtime yielded zero goals. Both teams were 5-for-6 in the shootout until Corban keeper Kaitlyn Mendenhall made a diving stop of Lisa Elledge’s liner in the seventh round. On Corban’s ensuing chance, Olivia Erskine fooled SOU keeper Kylie Moltzen, freezing her and ending the game with a finessed shot. The Raiders ended their season with a 5-10-2 record. Corban (10-6-3) will move on to play at second-seeded Concordia in Saturday’s semifinals. Warner Pacific plays at regular-season champion Northwest in the other semifinal. Corban has shut out six of its last seven opponents, a trend that started with a 1-0 win over SOU on Oct. 4. The troubling part for the Raiders was that they again maintained an advantage in shots, 13-5 in regulation, but could not convert. Only one of the last 10 teams they played got off more shots than them. Volleyball The 13th-ranked Raiders get to play two matches on their home floor for a conference title. Southern Oregon (20-4 overall, 14-2 Cascade Conference), which began the year unranked and was predicted in the CCC preseason poll to finish third, enter this weekend tied in first place with 11th-ranked Eastern Oregon. If the Raiders defeat Concordia tonight in a 7 p.m. match and Warner Pacific Saturday at 5 p.m., they will earn at least share of the title. It doesn’t figure to be simple. Third-place Concordia (16-7, 13-3) downed the Raiders in four sets on Sept. 20 in Portland, and Warner Pacific (5-16, 3-13) pulled off a huge upset in Ashland two years ago that cost SOU a shot at a title. “To have it come down to the last weekend is utterly thrilling,” said SOU head coach Josh Rohlfing, whose team last shared a title in 2010 with College of Idaho. “This was our goal, and we’re right there knocking on the door. I have no doubt we’ll come out with tenacity, and wherever that leaves us is where we’re destined to be.” Cross Country The Cascade Conference championships Saturday at Portland’s Fernhill Park will feature four ranked teams in both the men’s and women’s races and some familiar narratives. Southern Oregon is again the villain of the men’s 8,000-meter race, which starts at 11 a.m. The second-ranked Raiders are the favorites to win their seventh consecutive CCC title, but head coach Grier Gatlin is convinced they’re not shoo-ins because of challengers like ninth-ranked Eastern Oregon. In the women’s 5K, starting at approximately 11:45 a.m., No. 14 College of Idaho will have its work cut out to win a fourth straight title with fourth-ranked Northwest Christian in the mix, but No. 20 Oregon Tech and No. 23 Southern Oregon are capable of sneaking up, too. The winning teams get to take seven runners (including an alternate) to the NAIA Championships on Nov. 22 in Lawrence, Kan. Other teams have to rely on an at-large bid. The top-four placers on teams that don’t advance to the NAIA Championships will receive individual berths, as long as those individuals finish in the top 15 overall.
