Bramwell, field manager of the Utah-Oregon Sugar company in the Rogue River valley, arrived in Medford this morning, and after conference with W.H. Gore and the local committee, announced that $500,000 was available for the development of the beet sugar in the Rogue River valley. Accompanying Mr. Bramwell was a Japanese contractor, whose force of men will be used to handle the preliminary work incidental to the cultivation of the beets. White labor will be employed largely, oriental workmen being used only in those departments requiring long hours and infinite care at a small wage. Mr. Bramwell said that the acceptance or rejection of a $600,000 beet sugar factory was entirely up to the people of the the Rogue River valley. All they asked of them was 5,000 acres for cultivation, under five-year contracts. Nibley is Coming A letter was received by Secretary Latta of the Commercial club from Alex Nibley, secretary of the Utah-Oregon company, stating that he was in Portland awaiting word from Salt Lake City, and that upon its receipt he would come to Medford for a conference. A meeting will likely be held early next week between the beet sugar committee and Messrs. Nibley and Bramwell to determine definitely the position of the beet sugar people. Most of the officials and directors of the company are sons of Mormon millionaires whose sires desire to establish them in business. One of the most important matters to be decided at the forthcoming conference will be the location of the factory. If it is placed in close proximity to this city, where the cash from the beets and the payrolls would flow through the tills of local merchants, several have guaranteed, to secure the 5,000 acres called for within a week. This feature is the only thorn. Plan Active Campaign Barring complications upon this point, an active campaign will be launched at once. The Commercial club has committees appointed ready for work. Mr. Bramwell announced that offices would be established in this city and at Grants Pass and a thorough and painstaking campaign waged for the required acreage. He also stated that the beet sugar factory was a strictly business proposition, without the taint of promotion, with the development and manufacture of one of the world's greatest commodities the only object. The kaiser's war of conquest has devastated the beet sugar area of Belgium and France, and for this reason new fields are being rapidly opened.
