Nicholas Reece Jacobson and Matthew Harland Jacobson, both 30, were sentenced to federal prison Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Eugene. Both had previously pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy to distribute more than 100 grams of heroin. The brothers, who have ties to both Jackson and Douglas counties, were arrested in October 2014 following an investigation lasting several months involving a confidential informant, the Drug Enforcement Agency, the Douglas County Interagency Narcotics Team and the Medford Area Drug and Gang Enforcement task force. While executing a search warrant Oct. 9, 2014, investigators found about 4 pounds of heroin, roughly $20,000, 17 firearms, body armor and night-vision goggles at 8865 Elk Creek Road in Trail. Nicholas Jacobson lived in the residence and Matthew Jacobson stayed in a trailer on the property, according to a release issued by the U.S. Department of Justice. Inside Matthew Jacobson's trailer, investigators found heroin paraphernalia, $1,237 and two pistols. Most of the firearms seized were loaded, and the weapons included multiple assault rifles, extended-capacity magazines and handguns, according to a sentencing brief filed by prosecutors against Nicholas Jacobson. The investigation began in July 2014, when a confidential informant in Douglas County tipped off investigators that a heroin dealer had moved to Jackson County. Through investigators, the confidential informant arranged two heroin buys in July and August 2014 as part of a sting investigation before the search warrant was served in October. About one month after the brothers were charged in federal court and released in February 2015, the two absconded. The brothers were missing until August 2015, when they were arrested in Medford. Investigators found the brothers were in possession of 6 ounces of heroin and $10,000, court records show. Federal prosecutors determined that Nicholas Jacobson played a bigger role in the scheme, and was sentenced to 97 months in prison. Matthew Jacobson was sentenced to 78 months. Five years post-prison supervision will follow both brothers' sentences. Reach reporters at 541-776-4471 or [email protected]. Follow him on Twitter at @MTCrimeBeat.
