Soccer equipment. Last spring, Emard, one of the Challengers starting defenders, started collecting new and used soccer equipment to send to the students at El Padul Christian School, located at the heart of the capital city. The school serves more than 400, pre-kindergarten through 11th-grade students who are so poor they can’t afford the uniforms and school supplies necessary to attend government schools, said Lorraine Evenson, Cascade’s Nicaragua Connections coordinator. The school is funded entirely by donations, said Evenson, who has visited there four times. “The majority are living in shacks made out of corrugated metal and plywood sheets that they have scavenged for,” Evenson said. “The whole family usually lives in one room, and they don’t have indoor facilities. They have electricity, but it may just be one light bulb hanging in the room. It’s pretty primitive.” Soccer and basketball are popular, and typically the kids play in their school uniforms — navy pants or skirt and a white shirt — and black dress shoes despite the 90-degree heat, Evonson said. For the last several years, Cascade has sent a team of administrators and teachers to El Padul in December and a group of students and teachers there over spring break to bring supplies (shoes, backpacks, school supplies, eating utensils, etc.) and help out as needed. Emard said she has not been part of these trips but learned a lot about the conditions in Managua through a foreign exchange student, Jena Calero, who three years ago stayed with her family for about eight months. After Calero returned to Nicaragua, the Emard family began brainstorming ways they could contribute to El Padul. That’s when they decided to donate their used soccer gear and ask others to do the same. “My school has held food drives and clothing drives, but this was a need I felt we hadn’t met yet,” Emard said. “It may not be a necessity, but it’s something I thought would be fun for them to have.” Before the Rogue Memorial Challenge in May, Emard told coaches about her project, posted fliers at the Soccer Post store and created a Facebook page, “Play It Forward for Nicaraguan Kids.” She and her dad built two large blue donation bins to put out during the tournament, and her cousin, a graphic design student at Western Oregon University, designed a logo for the project. During the three-day tournament, Emard said she collected about seven large bags of gear. “We got lots of jerseys, lots of cleats, lots of soccer balls,” she said. “People were pretty generous, and all of it was in pretty good shape.” Over the summer, Emard attended a Challengers Sports soccer camp where her coach and the girls on her team donated all the extra soccer balls and t-shirts. Emard also got permission from Medford’s Parks and Recreation Department to leave a donation bin at U.S. Cellular Community Park and at Fichtner-Mainwaring Park. The bins will be out on the fields until November. Since mid-August, Emard has collected an additional five bags of soccer cleats, balls, socks, shin guards and jerseys from the bins.
