OSU Beaver Club to open Medford office Oregon State University Associate Athletic Director Greg Byrne announced Thursday the school will open a fund-raising and support office in Medford for the OSU Beaver Club by July 1. The position of Southern Oregon regional director will be filled within two weeks. "We think this is an ideal time to bring a representative of Oregon State athletics down there to Southern Oregon," says Byrne. "With our football and basketball programs on the rise, we think the timing is perfect." Byrne says the Southern Oregon director will work with a fast-growing Southern Oregon Beaver Club membership, which Byrne hopes will double by the end of the 2000 football season with the new director in place. "On a day-to-day basis, the director will be out in the community and be involved with business people and friends of Oregon State in Southern Oregon," says Byrne. "We want him to have a major presence in town." Byrne, 28, a former Southern Oregon regional director for the University of Oregon Duck Club, says that experience convinced him that there are plenty of Beaver and Duck fans in the area. Oregon continues to have an office in Medford. Oregon State officials -- including athletic director Mitch Barnhart, football coach Dennis Erickson and new men's basketball coach Ritchie McKay -- will make Medford one of their stops during an orange-and-black caravan around the state to promote Beaver athletics. The swing starts May 18 and will reach Medford May 23. "When Mitch Barnhart, Dennis Erickson or Ritchie McKay come to town, we want them to have as much contact with the community down there as we can," said Byrne. "Those are our fans and supporters." Byrne, son of former Oregon Athletic Director Bill Byrne, says the new person in Medford will supervise weekly luncheon meetings during the football and basketball seasons. He will also promote and direct OSU athletic department functions in Southern Oregon such as the Beaver caravan golf tournament and dinner.
