COLLEGE FOOTBALL Five Beavers who could have an immediate impact Comment By Gina Mizell The Oregonian MailTribune.com By Gina Mizell The Oregonian Posted Feb. 5, 2015 @ 5:38 pm By Gina Mizell The Oregonian Posted Feb. 5, 2015 @ 5:38 pm » Social News CORVALLIS — Recruiting is known as an inexact science. Top-level prospects fizzle out in college. Under-the-radar prospects develop into stars. So it seems silly to project the careers of Oregon State's 2015 class the day after National Signing Day. But new coach Gary Andersen assures first-year players will have a chance to see the field right away. So based on skill set and voids the Beavers need to fill immediately, here are five signees with a chance to make an impact in 2015: Treston DeCoud, cornerback Programs sign junior college prospects to compete right away for playing time. DeCoud, who was an All-American at Northwest Mississippi College and brings a blend of size, athleticism and physicality, could step into the starting cornerback spot vacated by Steven Nelson. Sophomore Dashon Hunt and redshirt freshman Dwayne Williams are also in line to challenge for that job. Nick Porebski, punter This is the biggest lock, as the Aussie steps right into a position of need after Keith Kostol's departure. Andersen, who stresses game-changing plays on special teams, said Porebski can be both a traditional and rugby-style punter. Paul Lucas, wide receiver OSU's biggest Signing Day steal — Lucas flipped from Arizona State to the Beavers on Wednesday morning — brings speed, versatility and underrated hands to the offense. Though the Beavers return their entire receiving corps, Lucas has the potential to be a dangerous weapon. Jay Irvine, cornerback Irvine, a stout athlete whose recruiting picked up late, was highlighted by Andersen as a player who could immediately compete for a spot at returner. Seth Collins, quarterback The dual-threat signal-caller, who turned down an offer from San Jose State to come to OSU, is already on campus and will participate in the spring quarterback competition. Collins is raw, which makes it unlikely that he will win the starting job in 2015. But depending on who does win that job, a package built for Collins' running ability could be an intriguing option. ( Note : Linebacker Christian Folau, arguably the Beavers' top signee, was originally included in this list. But he is expected to go on an LDS mission after graduating high school.)
